Techniques for Carving Wood Masks Many of Kevin's masks are carved from the Alder tree. It is wrapped in plastic and kept in a dark, damp location, usually next to the earth. Each time it is unwrapped to carve out the back and facial features, it is "wet wood". This takes time to carve. During the time period to carve a mask out of alder, it slowly cures (dries).
